So, I’m watching Hannity and Colmes tonight, when the subject of drug use by Obama comes up.

The context was that in discussing a NYTimes hit piece on Cindy McCain, which even Bob Beckel agreed was improper, Sean Hannity made a comment, which I only half heard, something like, he wouldn’t even think it right to bring up a candidate’s cocaine use, let alone a candidate’s wife’s temporary addiction to pain medicine. Colmes said he was glad Hannity wouldn’t bring it up, which I thought was pretty humorous.

Apparently, there is allegedly an admission in one of the books that Obama himself allegedly wrote that he alleges some experimentation with possibly illegal drugs in his youth. The typical H&C four-way shoutfest discussion subsequently turned to whether it is or is not valid to ask a candidate about past drug use.

So, I start thinking how I feel about such questions. And my answer is, yes, it’s a valid thing to inquire about, but in Obama’s case, it would probably not be in the top thirty or forty questions I would like to have answered. I’ve heard it has already been explored, but perhaps only with friendly audiences.

At any rate, that made me wonder what question I would like to ask each candidate if I had the chance to ask one question. I think these are good ones.

Senator Obama: What is the maximum percentage of his/her income that the wealthiest American owes to his government(s)?

Senator McCain: In order to unify the nation if you are elected, what steps will you take to show you can work with congressional Republicans?

Senator Biden: In your own words (yes, it’s a trick question) which of these three items would you not feel safe entrusting to Senator Obama - your wife, your wallet, your stash or your country?

Governor Palin: Hey, baby, what are you doing after the rally?

No, seriously, Governor Palin: If you were someday to find yourself negotiating with the head of a government not entirely friendly to America, what sort of information (three examples, please) would you need in preparation?

I think these are fair examples - well maybe not so much Senator Biden's - of what an unbiased media should be asking.
